Is biltong healthy?
Biltong is a great source of protein. It’s high in Vitamin B12 which is essential for cell replication and healthy blood cell count.

Biltong can be a useful high-protein snack, but “healthy” depends on the product, the portion and the rest of your diet. It is concentrated meat: drying removes water, which concentrates both the nutrients and the salt.

Why people choose biltong

Beef biltong is naturally rich in protein and supplies nutrients found in red meat, including iron, zinc and vitamin B12. Many traditional recipes are also low in carbohydrates because they use little or no added sugar. This makes biltong convenient when you want something filling without eating a large portion.

It is also easy to carry, does not require cooking and can be ordered according to your preference for leaner or fattier pieces. A lean cut will generally contain less fat, while a fatty piece will be richer and higher in energy.

What to watch

The main consideration is sodium. Salt is part of the curing process, and the amount varies between producers and spice recipes. Because biltong is easy to snack on, it is also easy to eat much more than a normal serving without noticing.

If you have been advised to limit salt, red meat or saturated fat, take that into account and follow advice from your healthcare professional. Product recipes differ, so broad claims about every type of biltong are not reliable.

A sensible portion

Treat biltong as a concentrated snack rather than an unlimited food. A small portion paired with fruit, vegetables or another source of fibre makes more sense than working through a large bag in one sitting. Drink water as well, particularly after a salty snack.

So, is biltong healthy?

For most people, good-quality biltong can fit comfortably into a balanced diet. Its strongest advantages are protein, convenience and flavour. The trade-offs are salt, portion size and—depending on the cut—the amount of fat. Choose a product made from quality meat, decide whether you want lean or fatty, and enjoy it in moderation.
